Exhibition: hold,follow

Hold, Follow
1st March - 26th March, Weds - Sun 11am - 5pm
An exhibition of work made during a week-long residency at Staithes Studios in December 2016 by visiting artists Gemma Lacey and David Armes

David and Gemma will be in the gallery to chat answer questions throughout Sun 26th March

Seeking a sense of moving through and around Staithes, Gemma and David established a daily routine: walk / take note / print. Keeping to the working rhythm, plates and formes were set up quickly and editions printed each day. Travelling to Staithes on public transport meant that tools and materials were kept to a minimum. Gemma brought foilcard drypoint plates that could be carried in a coat pocket and David used lightweight wooden and plastic type that could be set and hand-burnished without a press.

They had a wonderful time walking the landscape and wandering the streets of Staithes in a location where fishing, mining, tourism and agriculture meet. They were delighted by textures of stone, cliff, cobble, sky, fields, hedgerow and sea defences, many of which found their way into the finished work. Along the way there were plenty of breathtaking moments with dramatic light and surprise finds, like the old tunnel through the hill in the woods near Boulby mine. The result is an exhibition using the traditional print techniques of intaglio and letterpress that takes inspiration from the landscape in and around Staithes.

We first met Gemma Lacey several years ago at Turn The Page - book fair in Norwich where Stef was also exhibiting. We were drawn to her beautiful and preceptive work made in response to landscapes from extensive travels. We went on to show Gemma's work at our previous Gallery Duckett and Jeffreys and in The Touring Caravan Gallery. Gemma has made three lovely books based on her recent residency at Staithes which are in this exhibition. Each book is from a small edition of 12 and are available from the gallery.

Gemma Lacey is an artist born in Norfolk and now living in West Yorkshire. She is driven by process and a desire to share physical and emotional responses to places and situations. Primarily working in print, Gemma regularly shows work at Artist’s book fairs and exhibits nationally.

David Armes is an artist working with letterpress printing, language and geography. His work is frequently site-specific and considers how sense of place can be represented. He uses hand-set type and overlaps the elemental rules of letterpress with more expressive approaches.

Edinburgh Art Fair - Preparations

Exciting preparations for the Edinburgh Art Fair - last week this involved a studio visit to select a body of work from Yorkshire based artist Bren Head. Bren has the most amazing studio tucked into the cliffs just under the moors of Stoupe Brow giving spectacular view over Ravenscar and towards Robinhoods Bay. We even saw a deer in the garden who was not at all shy of extra visitors to the studio. The work inside the studio was pretty amazing too - this is what we selected to take to the Edinburgh Art Fair - stunning powerful painting!

Residencies at Staithes Studios

Last year we invited artist Susan Laughton to spend time at Staithes as a mini artists residency. The paintings she made in response were a stunning record of her observations. This year we are are hosting our second residency with a longer joint studio stay for artists Gemma Lacey and David Armes. Using a daily routine of walking both artists are going to communicate their findings to one another through various print methods to produce a body of collaborative work to be exhibited in the gallery in March 2017. We can't wait to see what they produce.
